A day out

San-Joaquin-Marsh
Roaming the paths at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary

Debbie and I found out about the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary last week on an episode of California's Gold. Yesterday we went to check it out for ourselves. The sanctuary is part of the Irvine Ranch Water District, and has a network of ponds to naturally treat the water. We saw some pelicans, ducks, and even got within a few feet of a blue heron. The paths are all pea gravel, so it was pretty easy to get around - although I needed help in a couple of sandy spots and hills. We had a nice stroll/roll around the ponds and followed it up with a picnic lunch. It was a real surprise to find something like right in a big city like Irvine, and worth a visit if you're in the area.
